Diamond State Data Services Olive Tree Varieties

Types of Olive Trees Planted Locally

-------

Earlier in 1999 the Frankland River Olive Producers Association (FROPA) sponsored a survey of local primary producers. The survey requested information on the number and variety of olive trees were planted or were planned to be planted.

FROPA greatly appreciated the responses, which exceeded all expectations. The assistance of the Great Southern Development Council (GSDC) was sought to tabulate the information and an acknowledgement and thank you to the GSDC is gratefully given.

Presently almost 25,000 olive trees have been planted in the Great Southern Region with plantings in the survey reported in locations from the Kalgan River area of Albany to MacLinden to the north of Boyup Brook. The planting of another 21,000 trees were reported in the planning stage.

Notes on the varieties: Paragon and Frantoio are believed to be the same variety.

This site would be greatly interested in receiving comments from Western Australia growers about their success or troubles with particular varieties.

In addition to the specific references I have found and noted above, there are a number of sites on the Web which discuss olive varieties (and their characteristics) in general. The sites listed below list many varieties which are not locally available.
